BioBitumen: Turning Farm Waste Into Sustainable Roads

BioBitumen — also called bio-binder — is a renewable alternative to conventional petroleum bitumen used in road construction. Developed in India by CSIR-Central Road Research Institute (New Delhi) and CSIR-Indian Institute of Petroleum (Dehradun) under the name KrishiBind, it's made by blending processed bio-oil, extracted from agricultural residues like rice straw, with conventional bitumen. Roads built with BioBitumen meet the same technical standards as conventional bitumen roads, while replacing part of the imported petroleum-based binder with a locally sourced, renewable material.
How is BioBitumen Made
The process of making BioBitumen starts with pyrolysis: heating biomass pellets to roughly 490-500°C inside an oxygen-free reactor. This breaks the biomass down into three products — bio-oil, bio-char, and pyrogas. The bio-oil is distilled to reduce its water content, then blended with hot bitumen (with lime added to improve moisture and ageing resistance) to produce the finished bio-binder, ready for use in road construction.

A 61.8 km stretch of the Jorabat-Shillong (Barapani) Expressway on NH-40 was resurfaced using BioBitumen and showed no cracks, potholes, or distress after 18 months of traffic loading.

Proven on Indian Roads
BioBitumen isn't just a lab concept. Field trial sections have been laid on live highways under real traffic and weather conditions, including a high-rainfall stretch in Assam and Meghalaya. Falling Weight Deflectometer surveys on these trial sections found structural performance comparable to conventional bitumen pavements, and the sections have held up well to sustained traffic loading over extended monitoring periods.
Why It Matters
For India, BioBitumen addresses two problems at once: heavy reliance on imported bitumen, and the environmental damage caused by burning crop residue. By turning farm waste into a usable construction material, the technology creates an additional income stream for farmers, reduces stubble burning and its associated air pollution, and lowers dependence on imported petroleum-based binders — all while meeting the performance standards required for durable road infrastructure.
